GYOPO is excited to be part of WE RISE 2021, a month-long series of experiences that tap into the power of creative expression and community to strengthen our individual and collective wellbeing. Created by the community for the community, WE RISE 2021 is an initiative of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and offers many ways to engage. Art Rise features a series of 21 art experiences across five Los Angeles neighborhoods.

GYOPO is producing a public art project at the Line Hotel featuring Jason, a video by artist, and GYOPO committee member Jisoo Chung.

Viewing
Jason will be displayed on a monitor outside of the LINE hotel’s lobby 24/7 and will be projected in the motor court from 7pm–7am from May 7–31. Video sound will play every 30 minutes from 9am-9pm.

About Jason

Jason seeks to subvert the dominant language in digital technology, which excludes the artist’s Korean name, “Jisoo.” Digital devices and platforms have perpetually autocorrected her name to “Jason” since immigrating to the United States to study art. Using her hand to narrow the view, as if an aperture of a camera, Jisoo Chung creates vignettes that capture unassuming subjects, random male pedestrians on the streets of Los Angeles. This voyeuristic gaze aligns with the video’s narration, which includes various descriptions about “Jason,” collected from online profiles and the artist’s own imaginings. Jason evokes feelings of isolation, disembodiment, and otherness that immigrants experience when their identities are renamed through autocorrection, mispronunciation, or outright dismissal. Jason has been adapted for WE RISE.

Jason 은 예술가의 한국 이름인 “Jisoo”를 배제하는 디지털 테크놀로지의 언어를 전복시키고자 합니다. 예술을 배우기 위해 미국으로 건너온 그녀의 이름은 디지털 장치와 플랫폼을 통해 “Jason”으로 지속적으로 자동 수정되었습니다. 조정 가능한 카메라의 렌즈처럼 손으로 좁혀진 시야에서 Jisoo Chung은 로스앤젤레스의 거리를 무작정 걸어 다니는 남성 보행자의 짤막한 장면들을 포착합니다. 이 관음증적 시선은 온라인 프로필과 예술가 자신의 상상에서 수집한 “Jason”에 대한 여러 내레이션과 함께 중첩됩니다. Jason은 자동 수정, 발음 오류 또는 노골적인 간과 등 이민자들이 자신의 정체성이 개명 될 때 경험하는 고립감, 이탈감, 및 타자의 감정을 불러 일으킵니다. Jason은 WE RISE 2021의 전시를 위해 재각색된 작품입니다.

Jason trata de subvertir el idioma dominante en la tecnología digital, el cual excluye el nombre en Coreano de la artista: “Jisoo”. Los correctores automáticos de los dispositivos y plataformas digitaleshan cambiado perpetuamente su nombre a “Jason” desde que immigara a Estado Unidos para estudiar arte. Estechando la imagen del visor con la mano, como si se tratara de la apertura de una cámara, Jisoo Chung crea viñetas que captan sujetos sin pretensiones: hombres elegidos al azar que caminan por las calles de Los Ángeles. Esta mirada de voyeur se ajusta a la narración del video, la cual incluye diversas descripciones sobre “Jason”, reunidas a partir de perfiles en línea y de la propia imaginación de la artista. Jason evoca las sensaciones de aislamiento, incorporeidad y otredad que sienten los immigrantes cuando se renombra su identidad por medio de la correccíon automática, la pronunciación errónea o el total rechazo. Jason ha sido adaptado para WE RISE 2021.

Esta obra forma parte de Art Rise, una serie de 21 experiencas artísticas en cinco vecindarios de Los Ángeles producida en colaboración con museos, instituciones culturales y artistas, y encargada especialmente para WE RISE, una iniciativa del Departamento de Salud Mental del Codado de Los Ángeles que formenta el bienestar y la sanación a través del arte, la conexión, la participación comunitaria y la expresión creativa.
